Chapter 17

Gloriana

“My queen.” Catia bowed to me, her eyes darting between me and her captives. “You can’t trust them. Your guardleader is right, this could just be a ploy.”

“Thank you for your input.” My words had their intended effect, as she backed up and bowed her head once more as she remembered her place.

I glanced around from the Seelie guarding the entrance to my own guards. Fen nodded to me as though she could read my mind and approved of what I was about to do. If I was ever to truly live up to my role as queen, I had to start somewhere. These downtrodden Elves might be future Seelie… if they could earn our trust.

“It may seem to you all that I am just a helpless Elf who needs a bunch of bodyguards, but you forget that I have more than Elven magic at my disposal. Bring the wounded one to me.”

Lyall’s bond to me vibrated with respect and approval, yet he still drew his sword. He gestured to the Seelie guarding the entrance, and a Kitsune and a Veela reached forward to the wounded man. The one I’d nicknamed Tilda in my head blocked their path.

“What are you going to—”

The Veela grabbed her wrist and pushed her aside. The Kitsune grabbed the bandaged one, who met my gaze and allowed the Kitsune to escort him out of the tree without resistance. Aside from Skena and her friends, the wounded Elf was the youngest of them all, pale like me, having gained no blue in his complexion yet. He stood taller than me, but not as tall as Lyall, who towered over me from his position at my elbow.

I could feel the tension radiating off my guardleader as the Elf bowed not far from us, and his chin-length black hair shrouded his face. The Kitsune guard kept one hand on the prisoner’s arm, and the Veela did the same on the other side, escorting him closer to me. Blood seeped through the bandage, drawing my eyes to his otherwise naked chest.

“Will you accept my geas?” I asked him. I already trusted that Skena and her friends had joined us after seeing my magic at work. But I needed to know if I could trust the rest, and in turn, they needed to see firsthand that I was a rightful queen — with all the magic that entailed.

If this man was my enemy, I needed to gain information from him. But he also needed healing, and, if he was about to become a loyal subject, I wouldn’t undermine his freedom as a Seelie. Even to gain information. I had to be better than Iona.

“My queen,” he said. “You do not have to heal me to gain my loyalty. I give it to you freely.”

“My kiss will both heal you and establish the geas. Do you accept?”

“I will be most grateful.” His sea green eyes met mine without flinching.

I nodded, and he bowed lower to make it easier for me to reach him.
